The Swiss president Alain Berset opens Building Bridges in Geneva

02.10.2023

On 2 October 2023, Swiss President Alain Berset opened the fourth Building Bridges conference in Geneva. The Sustainable Finance event connects the financial world with international organisations and financial authorities.

Building Bridges 2023 will host transformative discussions that will shape the global sustainable finance agenda. The event starts with the Building Bridges Summit on the first day. The Summit will convene expert-led discussions to address our most critical and pressing global challenges. The discussions will explore the twin climate and nature crises, widening social inequalities and how to mobilize capital in unprecedented amounts to build a just, resilient, and sustainable future. Over the following days, more than 70 presentations, workshops and other formats will take place with international experts from over 100 organisations and institutions exchanging views on sustainability projects in the financial sector.

The presence of the Swiss Ministry of Finance

In addition to representatives of the financial industry, the Swiss Federal Department of Finance will also be represented in Geneva. State Secretary Daniela Stoffel will address the participants at the Closing Ceremony of Building Bridges on 5 October. In addition, the Special Envoyé for Sustainable Finance at the State Secretariat for International Finance, Christoph Baumann, will appear as a keynote speaker and panellist at several events in Geneva.

  • Building: A Sustainable Future
  • Green Fintech: Accelerating Solutions for Climate Change and Environmental Challenges
  • Creating framework conditions for sustainable investment
  • Accelerating the Energy Transition Through Financial Innovations

Swiss Stewardship Code

On October 4, the Asset Management Association Switzerland (AMAS) and Swiss Sustainable Finance (SSF) will publish the Swiss Stewardship Code, which provides asset managers, asset owners and financial service providers with guidance to encourage the active exercising of shareholder rights by investors in Switzerland. Investor stewardship is fundamental for effective investment and promoting sustainable businesses.

Integrating stewardship into the investment processes of the Swiss investment industry promotes a more sustainable and value-enhancing economy, and helps increase the long-term return for investors, adjusted for sustainability risks. The Code consequently makes an important contribution to the measures for a sustainable financial centre outlined by Swiss government.

About Building Bridges

Building Bridges is a joint initiative, launched in 2019 by Swiss public authorities, the finance community, the United Nations and other International partners to accelerate the transition to a global economic model aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the core of the initiative is the recognition that the scale and complexity of the transition require “building bridges” between multiple stakeholders in the finance, government, and  international development communities. The first edition of Building Bridges took place in October 2019 in Geneva.
